HOW ARE YOU DEALING WITH CURRENT EVENTS? There is so much going on this month that it is truly overwhelming. We are in a great period of transition, to say the least! Many people want to hold on to an old way of thinking and feeling about this country – they call it “the good old days.” I often wonder what period in time are they referring to? Do they think the eighties were the good old days? Do they want to return to a time of big hair and unregulated Wall Street tycoons and horrible real estate practices that ruined the economy for decades? I don’t think so. Or, going back further, do they want to return to the seventies, the sixties, the fifties? Each of these decades had tremendous problems. Civil unrest, lack of understanding of individual rights… is that what people want to return to? I wonder if the frustration of people who want to return to this unspecified “better” time is what caused Jan. 6th riot. WHAT DID YOU THINK OF THE CAPITOL INSURRECTION?
Meanwhile, COVID is still raging on. We are all trying to deal with it as best we can. There is major isolation, loneliness, frustration, illness, and literally death all around us. I do not have all the answers. I do know I am trying to keep in touch with friends using social media as best I can. Zoom calls are the new thing. All that has it’s own ups and downs, as you know. HOW CAN WE SUPPORT EACH OTHER THROUGH IT ALL?
On a happier note, I felt that the Inauguration of Joseph R. Biden was amazing, refreshing and hopeful. WHAT DID YOU THINK OF THE INAUGURATION? I am thrilled that we have a fresh start in this country and I sincerely hope everyone gives the new administration a chance. I am also thrilled that we have the first woman (and Asian/Black American) as the first Vice President. No matter your politics, I hope people can see the benefit and potential in this. My favorite part of the inauguration was AMANDA GORMAN!! This beautiful, self-possessed and talented person amazed everyone. As a poet myself, I was overwhelmed by her talent – not only in the the words she wrote but of how she spoke her Truth in dramatic, heartfelt ways. What are your thoughts? What has excited you, inspired you? What are you still trying to make sense of right now?
